ature writer and activist Gary Ferguson is the author of nearly two dozen books, including the award-winning Decade of the WolfHawk’s Rest and Through the Woods. While a speaker for The Georgia Review’s 2015 Earth Day celebration in Athens, he talked at WUGA about his most personal book yet, The Carry Home: Lessons from the American Wilderness. This memoir recounts the fatal 2005 canoe trip he and his first wife, Jane, took for their 25th anniversary that resulted in loss and grief. Initially feeling betrayed by the “nature” they worked so hard to preserve, he shares how this memoir ultimately led him to develop The Carry Home Workshops with his second wife, psychologist Dr. Mary Clare, to help others use writing and nature as tools for healing and transition.
